Avocado Salsa Guacamole Combo Dip for Graduation Party Tortilla Chip Platter
When my daughter graduated last spring, I wanted something on the snack table that felt festive but took minimal effort because, honestly, graduation day is already a lot. This combo dip was the first thing to disappear, and three different guests asked me for the recipe before we even cut the cake.
The idea is simple. Instead of choosing between guacamole and salsa, you layer them together so every scoop gets both. It is bright, creamy, a little chunky, and completely addictive alongside a big platter of tortilla chips.

Tips & Notes
- Seed your tomatoes before dicing. Removing the watery pulp keeps the salsa layer from making the guacamole soggy.
- Press plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the guacamole if you are making it ahead. Direct contact keeps air out and prevents browning.
- Use ripe avocados that give slightly when pressed. An avocado that is too firm will not mash well and will taste bland.
- For a party crowd, double the recipe and use a 9x13 inch baking dish as your serving vessel so everyone can reach it easily.
- Drain the salsa layer again right before serving if any liquid pools on top after chilling.
- Add a thin layer of sour cream between the guacamole and salsa if you want a creamier, non-vegan version that holds up longer on the table.

Why This Combo Works Better Than Serving Them Separately
Guacamole alone is rich and creamy, and salsa alone is bright and acidic. Together in one scoop, they balance each other perfectly. The acidity of the tomatoes cuts through the fat of the avocado, and the creaminess of the guacamole softens the sharpness of the jalapeño.
Layering them rather than mixing them is the key move here. You get distinct flavors in each bite depending on how deep your chip goes, and the presentation looks so much more impressive than either dip on its own. People at the graduation party genuinely thought I had spent a lot more time on it than I did.
Setting Up the Perfect Graduation Party Chip Platter
A great dip deserves a great platter setup. Arrange two or three varieties of tortilla chips around the bowl, including a thick restaurant-style chip that can hold up to a generous double scoop without breaking.
Fill in any gaps on the platter with lime wedges, a small bowl of pickled jalapeños, and maybe some sliced radishes for color. It takes five extra minutes and makes the whole spread look intentional and festive, which is exactly the energy you want for a graduation celebration.
